What is a one-way video interview?

In a one-way video interivew (also known as Asynchronus interviews), the applicant uses their own devices (e.g. a computer, tablet or smartphone) to record their responses to pre-determined questions. These responses are theen sent to the recruiter who gets to have look at the recorded responses at a time of their choice and see whether the candidate is a good fit for the job position and company.

This recruitment method differs from the traditional two-way video interview where teh candidate and recruiter interact in real-time over a video call. One-way video interviews offer recruiters the convenience in being able to assess a larger pool of candidates more efficiently, without the need for scheduling coordination or travel, or fixing up an interview time that suits both parties.

How does a one-way video interview work?

One great thing about a one-way video interview is that the process is simple. Once the candidate receives a link to the one-way video interview from the company, the candidate is typically presented a few questions to answer in the form of a video recording so that the hiring team can see how the candidate responds without it having to be face-to-face. This allows for recruiters to review the candidates and their responses at their own pace, come back to the recording at their convenience and also allow the candidate to answer the questions to the best of their ability without the pressure of a one-time answer.

This method eliminates the need for both the recruiter and candidate to be present at the same time and place.

The candidate records their answers through a platform or software provided by the employer. The platform then screens the candidate in terms of their personality and match to the company's target profile, and delivers to the recruiter a deeper insight into who the candidate is that the recruiters may not notice themselves.

How to prepare for a one-way video interview?

As a recruiter, you are most likely preparing for an interview nearly just as much as a candidate would, but here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Choose a good platform to conduct the interview: Recruiters should choose a platform that is easy to use and has features that will make the screening process of the candidates insightful, accurate, and confidential.
  • Define the interview questions: Recruiters should prepare a list of questions that will allow the candidates to expand on. These questions should help recruiters assess the candidate's personality, and behavior. By asking these questions, the recruiter can see whether the candidate will be a good fit for the company culture in the long-run.
  • Be sure to provide clear instructions to the candidate: Recruiters should communicate clearly with the candidate about the process, what they can expect, and any other relevant information. This will help the candidate feel better and be more engaging with the process.
  • Review the candidate's responses: After the recruiter has recieved the responses from candidates, they should review the recorded answers and assess the candidate fit for the job role and the company culture through the analysis provided by the platform.

There is not much preparation that goes into a one-way video interview platform which is why it helps recruiters save time and cost by letting their AI software do the analysis.

Benefits of using a one-way video interview

Time-saving One-way video interviews allow recruiters to o screen candidates more efficiently, as they can review the recorded answers at their convenience without the need for a live interview. This gives the recruiter time to complete other tasks.
Convenience  One-way video interviews eliminate the need for both parties to be present at the same time and place. Recruiters can playback a candidate's recording from any place at any time. This makes the interview process more flexible.
Consistent, accurate and fair evaluation One-way video interviews ensure that all candidates are screened fairly and that their responses are evaluated in a non-biased manner. This ensures for accurate target-profile matching and an insightful screening of the candidate's personality.
Wider reach  One-way video interviews allow recrutiers to reach a larger pool of candidates, as they can have the platform interview candidates from anywhere in the world. This allows recruiters to expand outside of their usual geographical range and find top talent in countries and cities that were not considered before. In turn, this helps the recruiters attract and gain more diversity and inclusion to the workplace.
Improved candidate experience  For the candidate,  one-way video interviews are more comfortable to approach, and has a less intimidating format than a live interview. This can result in higher-quality responses as the candidates can take their time in answering the questions, thus having a better overall candidate experience.

Retorio employs a system of artificial intelligence (AI) that supports human intuition through the form of a video. The technology used is based on popular and well-researched personality scales also known as the Big5 Personality model which has proven to be a solid and reliable predictor of personality and job performance.

In order to calculate a predicted perceived personality, Retorio's AI platform quantifies the behavior of the participants in the assessment that include their facial expressions, gesture, language, and voice to derive a perceived personality prediction.
